THE HOUR

THE HOUR

LONG BERANG STREAM, BORNEO
5 pm until 6 pm
A common phenomena in Animistic worldviews describes the appearance of spiritual bodies during the hour of dusk. My practice through Borneo involved our guide Ahmad to seek permission from the spirits of the forest that we would be photographing on site. It is during this hour that Ahmad made our presence known to each other. ‘It is best to always ask for permission before we take any photographs, it is not polite to barge in on their space during their waking hour.’ It was here that Ahmad would ‘interact’ with the spirits of the forest, describing to us in great detail of their appearance, age and character. Andi, on his own occasion, would testify the appearance of the spirits in the same exact account as Ahmad’s description. Leaving most of us bewildered as fear, doubt and uncertainty of the validity of their experiences swirled around our rationale.
